Grandcats—Max (aka Mr. Skitters)

Max (aka Mr. Skitters) joined the McManus household in the fall of 2011 as their third cat. As with any kitten, he displays lots of energy and wouldn’t let me get near him with a camera. Therefore my daughter Wendy took these photos of Max. (The fact that arthritis prevents my getting down on my knees for this type of photo might have been another reason for Wendy taking the photos.)

Chili, the oldest of their three cats, mostly ignores Max’s efforts to play, but Oscar who is much younger, and previously the dominant cat in the home, is intimidated by the new arrival. Watching the interactions of the three cats provides hours of entertainment.

For earlier photos and antics of Oscar and Chili or my Austin grandcats, check out http://www.joyontheroad.com/wordpress/?p=16 or http://www.joyontheroad.com/wordpress/?p=255

Chis Hunt/Devona Boerema wedding, July, 2010–Lakeport, California

On July 31 families of Chris Hunt and Devona Boerema, along with numerous friends, gathered in Lakeport, California, to share their marriage ceremony and reception with them.

Chris’s mother Mary (my sister), and some of our other sisters, Joyce Ann, Barbara Jean, Nancy Lynne, and I and two of my nieces, Melissa and Nancy Carol, met in San Francisco for two days of sightseeing before driving to Redding, California, to visit overnight with Angie (Sunnie), who is Mary’s daughter. The entire crowd then drove to Lakeport for a weekend of fun, the wedding being the main event!

Wedding party presented to the crowd.

Here Chris and Devona are flanked by her two children, Daryl and Melissa, who participated in the ceremony in a gazebo in the lovely lakeside park on Clear Lake.

Grandcats provide candid moments

Visits in November through January with my daughters and sons-in-law in Austin and Orlando provided many opportunities to photograph my grandcats. I’ve displayed a pic of each of the four here, and then you can click on any photo to see the latest slideshow. Selecting Grandcats (under Family) in the Topics list provides slideshows of all my grandcats taken over the last five years.

Oscar-Jan2010 - 2

Oscar (McManus, Orlando) knows how to relax. One of his other photos shows that he knows how to r-e-a-l-l-y stretch, too.

Chili-Jan2010 - 3

Chili (McManus, Orlando) has mastered relaxation techniques, too. During TV-watching time in the evening, his favorite spot is on a plastic bin of laser discs.

Tia-Nov2009-02

Tia (Abbing/Thomas, Austin) is a delicate lady who enjoys lots of lap time. Here she observes all the action around her from the end table.

Obi-Jan2010

Obi (Abbing/Thomas, Austin) has discovered a new favorite spot: under the cover of his futon. Obi has decided that he likes to be with his humans and joins them more and more often, even jumping on the couch with them.

Turning 70 ain’t too bad…if you have three birthday parties/Party #2-Batesville, Indiana

My daughters chose Wine-All-You-Want Cafe in Batesville, Indiana, as the location for my second birthday party. I expected only family and a few freinds.

Surprise! My daughters had invited friends and former students from Lawrenceburg, Indiana, as well as friends from Indianapolis, one I’ve known for 52 years, some for 37 years and the others for 17 years. Many family members were also able to join us for food and fun.

I was REALLY surprised and spent the next four-five hours trying to visit with everyone there. I am a very fortunate person!

Turning 70 ain’t too bad…if you have three birthday parties/Party #1-Indianapolis

A milestone birthday: 70. However, I am so fortunate to have wonderful daughters and friends who arranged and celebrated the occasion with me in both Indiana and Houston

Party #1 was a dinner party in Indianapolis at A2Z Italian Cafe (http://www.a2zcafe.com) on East 96th Street. My friend Leandra had introduced me to Ash and the A2Z and every meal there had been a delight. When I asked Ash if he could accommodate our group for a drinks and dinner, he readily assured me that he and his staff would love to have us dine there.

Long-time friend Sharon had brought several of her photo albums (works of art) which contained photos of many of the guests. Those photos ranged from the late 1960s to the present, including pics of my daughters Helena and Wendy (who along with their husbands were the evening’s hosts).

Toasts and lively conversation filled the evening. Bringing together people who have known each other for 16—50 years means the stories shared were both hilarious and touching. Friends. Food. Fun. I’m such a fortunate person.

Wolfina, a new traveling buddy

I have a new traveling buddy, a stuffed wolf whom I’ve named WOLFINA (aka Wolfie). She spent many years on one of nightstands of my friend Leandra who lost her five-year battle with cancer in late May. Now Wolfina belongs to me.

View a slideshow of Wolfie by clicking on her photo. To return to the blog, use your Back arrow.

Wolfina (aka Wolfie) - 2

Wolfie wears the rainbow ribbon that Sheila gifted her.

Wolfie is filled with Leandra’s mischievous spirit and even with her laugh, which only I can hear. Well, maybe some of you will be able to hear the laugh too, if you listen very carefully. Wolfie and I have bonded already; she’s with me on the road, and we plan many adventures.

Here’s the tale of why I needed a new traveling companion. Many of you may remember that Mississipi Moose (MM), who actually belonged to Jennifer was my traveling companion for many years. Because I traveled alone frequently, Jen loaned MM to me so I wouldn’t be lonely.

MM was photographed at different places where I, alone or with friends, went sightseeing: on the Desert Loop roadside at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico, on a the ski resort lift near Taos and a bridge railing over the Rio Grande Gorge, both also in New Mexico.

Sadly Mississipi Moose was stolen from a side pocket of a piece of my luggage when I went on a cruise celebrating Sheila’s 50th birthday.

Jen’s friend Andrea, who lives in Switzerland, sent a moose replacement, but Andrea was firm in her instructions about his care: he could not travel with Joy!

I have a little bear which Sheila, Shelley, and Barbara bought for me on that infamous cruise as an MM replacement, but somehow the bear and I have never bonded even after traveling together for almost five years. I do like him, but…he hasn’t even been named.

I now have a Mississippi Moose replacement: Wolfina. Follow us as we travel coast-to-coast!

Turning 70 ain’t too bad…if you have three birthday parties/Party #3-Houston

A milestone birthday: 70. However, I am so fortunate to have wonderful daughters and friends who arranged and celebrated the occasion with me in both Indiana and Houston.

Sheila and Bill, my long-time friends and adopted children, saved gift certificates to Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar so we could celebrate my birthday in style on June 10. Because of a previous commitment, the Alexanders weren’t able to attend the BIG birthday party at Wine All You Want Cafe in Batesville, Indiana, on March 14 which was planned and executed by my daughters, Helena and Wendy.

So celebrate we did! To view a slideshow of the party, click on the photo below. Return here by clicking the JoyOnTheRoad tab or your browser’s Back button.

A new look for Joy On The Road

Daughter Wendy decided that I needed to combine my static web pages and my blog and control all with WordPress.

A simple task!

Several hours later that simple task was completed. Wendy read directions, called the site provider, experimented, re-experimented, and finally finished the project. At one point I suggested calling Dan for technical help, but she firmly replied, “No, I can do this!”

And she did!

WendyWebSiteEditing

Does it take three computer to redesign a web site/blog? Apparently so! Wendy moves from her PowerBook to my MacBook Pro. The computer with the strange symbol on its screen is my old PowerBook which Jim (my Mac Genius son-in-law—not to be confused with Dan, my PC Genius son-in-law) eventually brought it back to life.

Grandcats—Some people have grandkids; I have grandcats! Austin grandcats

Obi-Dec04

OBI: Named after Oberon, the king of the fairies in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Obi became my grandcat when my older daughter Helena married Dan. Patience and lots of belly rubbing were needed before Obi decided that he didn’t have to hide under the futon in the cat room every time he heard my approach.

Click on any photo to see each pet’s slideshow.

Tia-Dec04-HA

TIA: This sweet and not-so-shy lady, Obi’s sister (also named after a character from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titania, the queen of the fairies) also became my grandcat when Helena married Dan. Not so much time nor as much belly rubbing was required for me to make friends with Tia. She was always the first to stand at the screen door which separated their cat quarters from the remainder of the house (in the Ft. Worth home) and meow pitifully as though she were the most abused cat in the world.
